1. Your Soil Is Too Acidic

Before using dolomite, always test your soil pH.

• If soil pH is below ~6.0, dolomite can help move it toward neutral.

• Most vegetables, herbs, and ornamentals prefer a pH range around 6.0–7.0 for optimal nutrient uptake.

👉 Soil testing kits are inexpensive, and lab tests are even more accurate.

2. Your Soil Lacks Calcium or Magnesium

If a soil test shows low calcium and/or low magnesium, dolomite is a dual-purpose amendment, it adjusts pH and adds these nutrients at the same time.

3. Before Major Planting or Soil Preparation

Dolomite works slowly and needs time to react in the soil, often weeks to months, so the best time to apply is when preparing a bed before planting, especially in spring or fall.

Applying in fall gives it time to interact with soil over winter before plants emerge.

Do not add dolomite just because you think soil needs it. It should only be used when either:
